What size dumpster do you need?

Start with the amount of debris. Then check the material, weight limit, and space for delivery before choosing a container.

Estimate your debris volume

Measure an approximate rectangular pile in feet. This estimates space, not weight or an operator’s available containers.

Capacity, not a weight allowance

Dumpster sizes at a glance

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. The yard number describes volume; it does not tell you the container’s exact footprint or how many tons your rental includes. Dimensions and load limits vary by operator.

Available sizes vary by company. Confirm dimensions and availability before booking.

Some fleets use intermediate sizes. For example, Dumpster Today’s Austin page lists 12- and 18-yard containers. Ask for the actual dimensions instead of assuming every operator offers a 10- or 20-yard bin.

Check three things before delivery

  1. What is going inside? Separate your list into bulky household items and dense materials. Concrete, soil, brick, and roofing debris need a conversation about permitted materials and loading limits.
  2. Can the truck place it? Give the operator the driveway width, gate opening, overhead obstructions, slope, and unloading position. Ask about door clearance and surface protection.
  3. What does the quote cover? Confirm the rental period, included weight, excess-weight charges, and pickup arrangements. A physically larger bin does not necessarily include more disposal weight.

If your estimate is close to the limit

Send the operator photos and your measurements. Irregular furniture and loose debris leave gaps. Ask about the next size up and the cost of a swap if one container is not enough. Do not assume that breaking up dense material reduces its weight.

If loading the pile yourself is the bigger problem, compare rental with full-service removal.
